Accessing a Donor

Quick links

  • Overview
  • De-identified Donors
  • Known Donor

We facilitate access to a diverse selection of local and international donors, all of whom undergo thorough medical and genetic screening to give our patients the confidence that they are selecting altruistic, healthy and compatible donors for their fertility treatments.

Every donor is meticulously screened and processed in compliance with Western Australian legislation, upholding the highest standards of care and safety.

Using donor sperm

A sperm donor may be required by various individuals or couples, including:

  • Heterosexual couples with male infertility or genetic concerns for the male partner
  • Same-sex female couples
  • Single women

Using donor eggs

An egg donor may be required by various individuals or couples, including:

  • Heterosexual couples with female infertility or genetic concerns for the female partner
  • Same-sex male couples or single men (in conjunction with a surrogacy arrangement). *Note: Currently not permitted in Western Australia, although recent legislation changes will allow this in the near future.

Using donor embryos

An embryo donor may be required by various individuals or couples, including:

  • Heterosexual couples with male and female infertility or genetic concerns for either partner
  • Single women with infertility or genetic concerns

Contact Concept to access a donor.

De-identified Donors

Our clinic offers access to de-identified donors who have undergone comprehensive medical, genetic and psychological screening.

Concept offers two donor options for recipients of deidentified donor sperm.

  1. Local donors – Donors are clinic recruited; they donate their sperm, eggs or embryos to Concept for allocation to Concept recipients.
  2. International donors – Concept have a partnership with The World Egg and Sperm Bank (TWESB) as a provider of internationally sourced donor sperm and eggs and embryos created from donor sperm and eggs.

Recipient of De-identified Donor Process:

  1. GP Referral – To get started, you’ll need a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) to see one of our experienced fertility specialists.
  2. Fertility Specialist Assessment – A comprehensive medical review is required. This appointment helps us to understand your health history and tailor a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
  3. CMV and Genetic Screening – We recommend expanded genetic carrier screening and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) screening. These tests help ensure a broader and safer selection of compatible donors for you.
  4. Counselling – There are many important implications surrounding donor conception. This session will help you explore the implications of using donor material and help you prepare for the future as a parent of a donor-conceived child. After this session, you will either be placed on a waitlist to access Concept local donor profiles or be referred to The World Egg and Sperm Bank (TWESB) to select an international donor.
  5. Donor Selection
    • Local Donor Recipients: You’ll be added to a waitlist for available local donors. Your place on the list is based on the date of your counselling session. While we strive to minimise wait times, we cannot provide an exact timeframe due to various factors.
    • International Donor Recipient: You’ll register with TWESB and work closely with their client liaison to choose a donor who meets Western Australian legal and ethical standards. Once your chosen donor is approved by Concept, you’ll sign a TWESB contract and arrange payment for the donor sperm, eggs or embryos and shipping. This agreement is directly between you and TWESB.
  6. Counselling – After selecting a donor, you’ll complete a final counselling session. This ensures you’re fully informed and emotionally prepared before moving forward.
  7. Documentation & Consents – Our Donor Coordinators will assist you in completing all required documentation and consent forms to finalise the donor process.
  8. Treatment – Once your selected donor is ready for use, you will begin your personalised treatment cycle designed to give you the best possible chance of success.

Fees

The recipient(s) are responsible for all expenses incurred during the donation process, in addition to a Donor Management Fee. Please see our Fee Schedule for more information.

Known Donor

For patients who have access to a suitable known donor; often a sibling, relative or a friend, our team is committed to ensuring that all parties receive the highest quality care, offering compassion and personalised guidance at every step. We manage the legal, ethical, and medical aspects of your donation arrangement, facilitating a smooth and informed process for everyone involved.

Having someone you know undergo donate their sperm, eggs or embryos offers many benefits, including reduced wait times and greater knowledge surrounding the health status of the donor. All donors will need to be approved by a fertility specialist to ensure suitability as a donor.

Known sperm / egg donation process:

  1. Initial Enquiry – Contact our Donor Coordinators to discuss eligibility, the donation process and expectations.
  2. GP Referral – It is important that all recipients obtain a General Practitioner (GP) referral to ensure that you are eligible for a Medicare rebate.
  3. Fertility Specialist Assessment – A medical check-up is required to assess your medical history, and to confirm your donor treatment needs.
  4. Counselling – There are many important implications surrounding known donation, so it is important to be fully informed prior to deciding if known donation is right for you. All recipients and their known donors must attend at least three implications counselling sessions, individually and as a group.
  5. Cooling-off period – All known donor arrangements are subject to a mandatory three-month cooling-off period, as per Western Australian legislation.
  6. Donation Phase – Our dedicated science and/or nursing team will work alongside your fertility specialist to guide your donor/s through each step of the donation process.
  7. Quarantine – Three months after the donations are received by our laboratory, your donor/s will return for further tests. Confirmation of clear results allows the donation to be released from quarantine and made available to you for treatment, pending the completion of all required documentation.
  8. Documentation & Consents – The Donor Coordinators will email you multiple consent forms for completion throughout the donation process.
